Scheduling problems are widely studied in the Operations Research literature considering different (and classic) layouts. In the last decade a new layout is attracting attention, the assembly flowshop, where different components are produced by dedicated machines (DM) assembled in one or more assembly machines (AM) to obtain different products. Inspired in real manufacturing processes, a scheduling problem based on a two-stage flowshop or assembly line is proposed. Each stage is formed by two machines: one DM producing the component to be assembled by one AM. Additionally, the blocking assumption is considered, i.e there no exist buffer to keep the semi-elaborated product once it has been processed in the first stage. A mixed integer linear programming model is presented, in order to provide optimal solution to small instances. According to the results, more sophisticated methods should be derived to solve approximately realistic size instances in more competitive computational times.
